"Can I buy a man?"
Michael's Grandma, Elsie, had just won $10 in Bingo at her nursing home residence. This is what she replied when asked what prize she picked.
This is classic Elsie, a joking card-shark. At age 95, she has more spunk, wit, and hobbies than any of us. She is the Grandma who has been told she can't drink alcohol because of her medication, but orders a lager of whatever's on tap at Applebee's anyway.
"So, you had five kids, right?" Elsie's daughter in law reviewed recently. "That must have been hard."
And Elsie says: "Well, not really, all I had to do was hop in bed."
Two weeks ago, Michael got a phone call that his grandma has been diagnosed with advanced colon cancer, and has been admitted to hospice. Elsie, in her mid-90's, who had been pretty darn healthy all along, gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. Pretty ridiculous.
And so another name will be on the luminaries that line the track at this year's Relay for Life, glowing with the brightness that Elsie has been in our lives.
For our friends age 36, 95, 2, and everywhere in between: we're walking for you, and we'll walk for as long as it takes.
We would be honored to walk for your loved ones too: you can donate to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life by visiting my page at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/happybirthdayGin. Thank you for making lives better, at every age.
